Enola Holmes 2 staring Millie Bobby Brown as Enola was released on November 4th worldwide on Netflix. Also returning are Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes, Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes, and Louis Partridge as Tewkesbury. The main addition to the cast is the great David Thewlis as Grail.
Summary
In the first movie, we met Enola Holmes, the much younger but equally brilliant sister of Sherlock Holmes. She is a witty, smart and wonderfully awkward teenage girl. At the end of the first movie, she decides to stay in London, trying to make her own way, despite a budding romance with Lord Tewkesbury. The second movie starts with a brief summary of how Enola starts her own detective agency without much success. Bessie, a match girl , then hires Enola to find her sister Sarah. While investigating the case, Enola meets her brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill is hilarious as drunk Sherlock!), who is frustrated with his own case, concerning missing government money. The siblings quickly realize that their cases are connected and join forces.
Analysis
Enola Holmes 2 continues exactly where the first movie left off. The story is again action packed, but also offers plenty of comedy and romance. The main character Enola frequently breaks the fourth wall, which offers a wonderful comic relief and makes her relatable. Millie Bobby Brown as Enola carries the movie well, finding the balance between teenage girl and genius detective.
The supporting characters of Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill) and Enola’s mother Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter) are brilliant without outshining Enola. In particular, Helena Bonham Carter steals every scene as cheeky Eudoria, and the viewer almost wishes for a Eurodia spin off.
The development of Twekesbury (Louis Partridge) is perhaps the most significant. He was an insecure teenage boy in the first movie, and is now a young man capable of holding his ground in politics. His maturity is even addressed humorously. This might also be due to the fact that the actor Louis Partidge looks and sounds significantly older than in the first movie. The romance between Twekesbury and Enola is cute and not overly dominant. While many movies show teenage romance and have them navigate the waters of love way too confidently, these characters are adorably awkward and shy.
David Thewlis does a great job as Grail and makes him wonderfully unlikable. In very few scenes, he creates a villain that emanates danger and feels real.
Conclusion
The movie is a lighthearted action comedy, which is perfect to unwind in the evening. It is great entertainment and a feel good movie without being too cheesy. It leaves you definitely wanting more, and hopefully Netflix will make Enola Holmes 3. In that case, let’s hope that fan favorite Sam Claflin will return as Mycroft Holmes.
