Love, Victor is an American teen drama television series created by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. The final season (Season 3) aired on Disney+ on June 15, 2022, and we thought about doing a Round Table Review for this one. Joining me (Rike) are Nathalie, Jen, Serena and Lena. Are you ready for this one? Let’s go!
Q: We never knew a lot about Benji’s (George Sear) past, but this season the writers decided to show us some flashback scenes. Turns out Benji coming out to his parents wasn’t easy. Your thoughts?
L: I always like backstory, so I was all for this. Understanding characters’ traumas and/or hang-ups is a big part of truly seeing them and their motivations more clearly.
J: Seeing more of Benji’s backstory was definitely one of the few highlights this season for me. I loved finding out more about Benji’s past and getting to understand him a little better.
N: Seeing his backstory was probably one of the best decisions the writers made this season. It was so hard to watch, especially how they weren’t that accepting. However, after seeing that, I believe he could have shown more sympathy towards Victor and his mom not accepting him.
S: I kind of expected something like that to happen. Benji has always seemed a little troubled, even in the previous seasons where we did see him happy. I’m glad we got to see more of his backstory and understand him better. I’m just sad we only get it now that the show is over.
R: It’s always nice digging a bit in a character’s past to maybe understand his behavior nowadays a bit better. Sure, they mentioned some stuff from Benji’s past in earlier seasons, but this was only scratching the surface. Truly enjoyed these flashback scenes.
Q: Rahim (Anthony Keyvan) had his moment and called out the two boys who were laughing at him in the restaurant not long after he had to pretend to be someone else in front of his family. Do you think this scene in general just showed him again that he’s proud of who he is?
L: He is definitely proud of who he is, as he should be. We all need to try to give a little less of a shit about what other people think! Your family, or in his case extended family, not accepting of who you are sucks big time. Many LGBTQ+ people find ‘chosen families‘ for that reason. I‘m still glad Rahim‘s parents are cool, though.
J: I love that he stood up for himself, and I think many people need more bravery in their life. I think we often worry too much about what others think or try to find in some sort of box just to fit in with society, instead of embracing who we truly are. Rahim’s reaction was definitely understandable. Sometimes people just need to be put back in their place.
N: Not going to lie. I was worried it would end up in a fight. But he definitely stuck up for himself, and I love that. I can imagine that is hard, especially when your family doesn’t accept who you truly are.
S: Rahim is proud of who he is, but he also knows and understands why it’s a different story with his family. I like the way he handled himself, and that he doesn’t accept the homophobia. It fits the character, he is well, and I like seeing him stand up for himself after having to hide for a while.
R: DAMN! This scene. Only a few seconds long, but it showed so much. In my opinion, we can see his character development while he’s standing up for himself, and who he is and wants to be. Well done to the writers and the acting in this scene!
Q: The last episode of Love, Victor truly was a rollercoaster ride with Happy Ends, mostly because of Victor’s (Michael Cimino) “being brave” speech. How did you feel about that?
L: All the endings felt rushed – to some extent. Victor’s speech was great and important! It was just tinged with the fact that they rush happy ended people and gave others unsatisfying endings. rolls eyes
J: Victor’s speech was important and in general a good closure, but it didn’t make up for the rest of the season for me. I’m glad people indeed got their happy endings, I just wish it would have been done in different ways. So, while I liked the speech and the outcomes for the characters, I didn’t like what “we had to endure” to get there. Could have been done way different. Way better. In my opinion, at least.
N: I am glad about some happy endings, not all though. I definitely feel like Felix (Anthony Turpel) deserved a better ending than he got. The speech did make it feel like the show went full circle from Victor’s perspective, and I liked that. He can now help so many other kids.
S: It’s such lazy writing. I feel like the show got canceled right as they were still in the middle of filming, which is why many stories got so hard. I feel like the writers had a hard time letting go of the fairytale couple endings, which is why so many of them didn’t make sense. In a perfect world where all of them had more time, or where the writers don’t want to turn it into a Disney ending, most of the couples would have broken up and they would have been happier for it. Victor and Benji would never work out in the universe created for them, because Benji wasn’t ready and Victor didn’t have the emotional maturity to support him.
The ‘Be brave’ speech was a cheap cop clearly written before the end of filming to give all the characters a kick in the ass to make some very forced happy endings. I really wasn’t here for it, and I feel like the way they worked that into the story kind of ruined the entire season and all the progression for me. It’s like everyone forgot all the problems they were dealing with ‘just for love’, when in reality if Victor had not given that speech, people would not be doing that.
R: I guess the writers were like: “Oh shit, this is the last episode, and we still need some happy endings.” However, I enjoyed Victor’s speech a lot. Like a whole damn lot. He finally realized what’s good for him and who he should be with. Felix is right though, Victor could be a good life coach. Anyway, even though there were many happy endings, I’m still not satisfied, and it still doesn’t feel right to me.
Q: Did this last season of Love, Victor live up to your expectations?
L: Not even close. I expected a lot of it, and it didn‘t meet any of my expectations – at least I don‘t recall any it met. Truthfully, since seeing it, I have been trying to ignore this season’s existence. Lol. Had to think really hard if I wanted to even do this round table. This was one of my favorite shows, and now this season’s ending ruined most of that for me.
J: It sadly did not at all. I was looking forward to seeing all my beloved characters back on screen. However, the disappointment grew with each episode, even though I have to admit that I liked the last couple of episodes more than the beginning. That being said, it felt rushed and like they tried to cramp as much drama as possible, instead of concentrating on finishing up all the old plots and story lines.
N: Not even close. It felt so rushed, like they tried to cramp as much as they could in these tiny 8 episodes. Sometimes it seemed like a bad rollercoaster. There were some good bits and some characters had such outstanding development, but I feel like there were so many things we could’ve done without. Like pretty much the entire Nick situation.
S: No, I’m so sad it didn’t. Like I mentioned before, I feel like the writers wanted to do too much to the story in very little time, since they only had 8, 30 minute episodes. I’m frustrated that a show I enjoyed a lot ended like this. Sure, there are happy endings for characters I like, but the only ending that made sense to me was Felix and Pilar (Isabella Ferreira) staying broken up. All the others felt like the fake happy Disney ending that did not fit the characters or the journey they’ve had over the past 3 seasons.
R: No. Definitely not. I mean, yeah there were happy endings, but it still didn’t feel right. Like I already said, things changed while watching this last season. Too many rushed scenes, and I know there’s only so much you can do with eight episodes and all these characters, but that’s not it. I wish these rushed scenes were the only bad thing, but I feel like they added unnecessary drama to these last episodes. TV series are about drama, I know, but most of the time it was a bit on top. Oh, and let’s not forget about the awkwardness, especially in the first half of the season. God. I truly wish things would have been different, but we have to live with the result now.
Q: Your score on this last season of Love, Victor (1-10)?
L: Ufff. Honestly, just because I love Victor as a character and all the actors, I‘ll be kind and give it a sad 6.
J: 4-5. 4 most of the time, 5-6 for the few cute, funny or emotional moments. In general, I’d go with a 4, though I’d say.
N: 5. It can’t compete with the earlier seasons.
S: It’s hard. As a show, I loved this, but this last season was awful for many reasons. I can’t give it more than a 5.5, it’s passable but only barely.
R: Let’s go with a 4.
