Legacies has been canceled marking the “official” end of the TVDU on the CW since 2009. Legacies is the second spin-off of the wildly successful and still popular show The Vampire Diaries. The Vampire Diaries first aired in 2009. It is loosely based on the series of young adult novels of the same title by Lisa Jane Smith, first published in 1991. The show’s popularity made way for its first spin-off show entitled The Originals which aired from 2014 to 2017. The end of Legacies marks the end of the tv run of the TVDU after an impressive 14 years.
This devastating news is hard for many fans who love the TVDU and its characters. For many, Legacies is a continuation of a love affair with characters that have been a part of fans’ lives for many years. For some, it is the end of a story that many consider to be their first love and introduction to the TVDU. The news of the show’s cancelation is a hard thing to accept for some. Now what remains to be seen is how this series will bring an acceptable ending to the TVDU universe itself.
Welcome to Mystic Falls!
For me, reading the news that Legacies was quite surreal. In fact, when I learned of the cancelation, I was fresh off of the Vampire Stalkers Tour in Covington, GA. Covington is better known to TVD fans as “Mystic Falls” though The Vampire Diaries is not its only claim to filming fame. I had just spent the last two hours reveling and fangirling over filming site locations, filming stories, and humor. Wrapping up the tour, there were pleas to post photos along with the hashtag #RenewLegacies. To say there would be many disappointed and heartbroken fans would be an understatement.
The Vampire Diaries is a phenomenon that has certainly taken over the heart of Covington. I believe this will remain that way for many years to come despite the ending of the current syndication. This is certainly evident in Town Square. Many businesses pay a nod to the shows by displaying themed merchandise, murals, and there is even the Mystic Grill. The TVDU has certainly become beloved by the community and is a source of pride.
The stories of The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and Legacies, have inspired fans to share their love in many ways. There are fan conventions to attend, you can visit and tour “Mystic Falls” including eating at the famous Mystic Grill, write fan fiction, create fan art, and so much more. The end of Legacies will by no means stop that creative outpouring of admiration and love.
