Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 4: Analysis
This episode is probably meant to be a homage to “A New Hope”, with Obi-Wan infiltrating an imperial base looking for Leia. It even contains a little Easter egg, as Tala leaves her communicator exactly as C3-PO does in “A New Hope”. Since only the basic plot points resemble “A New Hope”, it doesn’t feel like a remake.
Unfortunately, the plot contains several plot holes. One such hole sees Leia hiding under Obi-Wan’s coat, and nobody seems to notice. Unfortunately, this sort of thing is becoming frequent in today’s TV shows. This is likely due to tight production schedules.
Obi-Wan’s development however is built-up nicely. This episode shows how he is beginning to get back his mojo. He starts to accept his role as protector once more. Obviously, this is the key to getting back in touch with the force. Ewan McGregor definitely shines again in the episode, as does Indira Varma. She has managed to make Tala a deep and layered character.
Unfortunately, the writers are not giving Moses Ingram enough to work with yet. While Reva was terrifying in the first two episodes, she is now becoming a caricature. Her character needs more background and layers to be a little less one-dimensional. This is evident when she interrogates Leia. Instead of terrifying, it feels ridiculous that she intents to torture a child for information. This is a pity, since Moses Ingram is a great actress.
Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 4: Conclusion
While episode 4 is far from perfect, it provides solid entertainment and feels like Star Wars. The cast does a great job, but the writing has some weaknesses. Hopefully, in the upcoming episodes, the story will focus a little more on Reva. What drove her to become as ruthless and ambitious as she is? If these things were explained, she would make a great villain.
