Following the success of Despicable Me and Minions, the movie “Minions: The Rise of Gru” focuses on the story of Gru and the Minions just before they became actual and professional villains. It will explore Gru’s (Steve Carell) journey to become an actual villain, and the Minion’s parallel journey to join him.

Minions: The Rise of Gru: Synopsis

The untold story of one twelve-year-old’s dream to become the world’s greatest supervillain.

Plot

I am sure you have heard of the Minions at some point, and you may have watched any of the Despicable Me movies. If you have done so, you NEED to watch this one!

The beginning of the movie revolves around the Vicious 6, the band Gru will join -or try to- later on. I first thought it was pointless, what was the relationship between that small story and Gru? What was my surprise when I realized the link between them and Gru.

Characters

We can see a young Gru who already knows what he wants to do when he grows up. He shows an incredible IQ level for a boy of his age -it actually resembles the adult Gru so much-, but he has some characteristics that fit perfectly in a 12 years old boy: he is a super fan of a famous villain’s band, Vicious 6. He worships them, and as soon as he knows there’s a vacancy in the team, he does everything in his power to get it.

We are also presented a very strict mum who seems like a robot. She only cares about selling her products and giving a good image, she even looks like just a nanny. Her character is exactly the same as the previous movies, only with a younger look.

Someone who actually surprised me was Doctor Nefario (Russell Brand). When he meets Gru at the store, he looks actually nice and not like a crazy scientist. He doesn’t doubt Gru when he asks how to get to the Vicious 6 secret place, and he even helps him when he’s escaping some moments later. I believe he is the most changed character compared to the previous movies: he looked crazy and not as good looking in the other movies, but in this one he looks quite attractive and VERY smart.

Minions: The Rise of Gru Review

I think this movie is one of the best of the Minions saga. I was afraid of it being disappointing -I mean, we had 4 movies before this one-, but it actually surprised me in the best possible way.

The way it’s connected to the previous movies and how it’s developed is so catchy! The animation is fantastic, and the dialogue and story are well executed. Obviously, my favorite characters were the Minions, who had a very interesting story line here. I particularly loved how their parallel adventures were developed while Gru had his. The comedy point they had was actually one of the best ones they’ve had until now. At some points, I was crying with laughter!

In summary: This is a fantastic movie to enjoy with friends or family. It’s linked to the previous movies, but you can watch it without seeing the previous ones.
