Lockwood & Co

Lockwood & Co cancelled after one season by Netflix

The highly acclaimed young adult fantasy series Lockwood & Co is the latest victim to Netflix’s cancelling spree. Despite only minimal advertising, Lockwood & Co has gathered rave reviews and topped the charts in several countries. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough for Netflix, who have decided to cancel the show after only one season.

Ironically, it is this habit of Netflix cancelling the young adult fantasy series that is probably the reason why the show has failed to reach their expectations. Apparently being number one in 18 countries wasn’t enough for that. It is commonly known in the nerd community that Netflix tends to cancel fantasy shows directed specifically at young adults. This is why many viewers won’t watch a show until at least a second season has been greenlit to avoid disappointment. In many ways, the cancellation becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The Story Arc

The cancellation is particularly frustrating, because there are 5 books in total, and season one only covers the first two. Fans of the books know what is to come, and that the arc could be finalized with one more season. The books finish the complete story arc in a satisfactory way, and it truly is a shame that one of the best book adaptations should not be finalized, despite being a major success.

The “Save Lockwood & Co” Campaign

One of the wonderful things about nerds is that they are passionate about their stories and shows. Immediately after the announcement, the fans went to work and started a petition (which at the time of writing this article had gathered over 16700 signatures) to find a new home for their beloved show. Hashtags like “DisneyforLockwoodandCo” are trending on Twitter, and fans are writing mails and hosting watch parties.

Campaigns like these have worked in the past, for example with Lucifer. However, back then, Netflix was the savior of the show, instead of its executioner. Although the campaign might not work, it is amazing to see the audience make their voices heard. After all, they are Netflix customers, and the customer is always right. Right?

If you want to help the campaign, you can sign the petition here.
